Catching Euphorbia Seeds Before They Pop and Planting Them Baggy-Style

Spoiler alert: We have germination and the seedlings are adorable!

This video shows how I am using a bin and some screen to ‘trap’ my Euphorbia platyclada seeds. Why? Euphorbia seed pods tend to pop open and shoot out their seeds in an effort to distribute their seeds further away from their location. I also start the seeds in sterile soil and show y’all how in the video.

Luckily, Euphorbia platyclada has both male and female flowers on the same plant so it can self pollinate.

I sowed the seeds in a sterilized organic soil mixed with Turface MVP. Here’s a video on how I sterilized my soil in the microwave. https://sucsforyou.com/2024/02/10/sterilizing-soil/

I’ll keep them in a closed bag to maintain moisture and humidity. The ideal temperature for germination of Euphorbias is 68–77 °F (20–25 °C), so I’ll be keeping them indoors for a while until it cools off a bit more here in Houston.

Update: Germination began about 4 days after sowing and all 7 seeds from the first 2 capsules have emerged as of 10/28/2025.
