This is a bonus post to show and tell the backstory to the garden featured in my latest video ‘How to Build a Cacti and Succulent Garden.‘
We moved to our new house in the summer of 2016. Not long after I settled in, I was given some big prickly pear pads from a lovely local Houstonian who has an amazing xeriscaped front yard. Seeing her accomplishment flourish inspired me to try my hand at a much smaller-scaled cacti garden.

Today we’re talkin’ dirty! Here’s a video demo showing how and what I use to make a high drainage mix for cacti and succulents.
Growing cacti from seed is easy and rewarding! It takes patience and a few guidelines to start cactus seeds.
This is a macro video demonstrating how to remove the fruit and harvest the seeds from a cactus (Species is Mammillaria Haageana). This variety does bear edible fruit known as Chilitos, and I did taste it afterwards! A bit underripe, sour, no distinct flavors just yet..but not unpleasant!

If you see little ants on your succulents and other plants, stop and follow them…many ant species will lead you straight to a pile of mealybugs before you even notice them on your plants!
