It just so happens that I have a plethora of Beefsteak Begonia propagations of various methods in the works right now so I wanted to make this video showing what the progress is like on each, and talk about my favorite method and why I’ll probably use it most often.

This is a super easy hands-off way to propagate Begonia erythrophylla ‘Beefsteak Begonias.’ Starting cuttings in water takes no effort at all but when it’s time to transfer them to soil, it’s important to maintain a lot of moisture until new roots are established.

Plant Profile: Dorstenia bahiensis – a native to eastern Brazil rainforests. This is a THIRSTY plant in the Ficus family (Moraceae) with really nice shiny leaves and a very peculiar flower.

I love this Begonia ‘Cachuma’ so much so I was worried when it really started going downhill after being indoors through the hot summer and cold winter. I wasn’t watering it enough and it wasn’t getting enough light.

So here’s another fun problem to look out for, but only if you have a pecan tree nearby: Aphid Rain. (I think I made that term up, but maybe there’s something more scientificky.)
I first noticed my car literally covered with small sticky droplets and thought it might have been nectar from the Crepe Myrtle flowers overhead. Then I noticed similar droplets on my plants’ leaves, table, deck…pretty much everywhere in my backyard where there is no Crepe Myrtle in sight.
